Thornton Bridge, Nr. Helperby - Left Bank (YO61 2RH)

The Swale at Thornton Bridge is just upstream of the villages of Helperby near Boroughbridge. It can be reached from the A1 through Boroughbridge or by the A19 and taking the first turnoff sign posted Asenby and following Whaite Road south through Cundall village. This is classic lower Swale with plenty of tree covered swims to choose from. The main access points upstream and downstream is from the road bridge over the Swale. Parking in the lay-bys either side of the bridge.

Downstream

The length downstream of the bridge (left bank looking downstream) runs for over 1250 yards to the old railway viaduct which is the limit. From the road bridge the river starts quite wide and shallow and runs through large mature overhanging trees, then emerging in to more open surroundings and deeper water. Just above the viaduct the trees on the opposite bank thicken up again providing the fish with plenty of cover. The depth varies all along the length, from a couple of feet below the bridge to 10+ feet further down river. There is also access down to the viaduct via the old railway line. This is off the driveway of Bafferton Fisheries.

Upstream

The upstream part of the river is quite wild and covered with lots of willows. From the road bridge (right bank looking upstream), the length runs for 650 yards to the top side of the small woods. There is an access point through the woods off Fawdington Road.

The main species being roach, perch, chub, barbel, dace, eel, bleak and pike.

Maunby village is approximately 13 miles North-West of Thirsk and is best approached from the A167 or A168 off the A19. There is one road through Maunby down to the village green. To fish the bottom of our three waters you have to pass the village green and go down the short lane at the bottom. Do not block access! Cross the field through the gate down to the river. The upper two lengths are accessed off Pickeringmoor lane (near Rush Farm). This lane turns off the right side of the village green as you approach it. Follow the lane for 1900 yards and turn left through the gate just after the cattle grid. You can take you vehicle on to the bank here, but proceed with care. From this point length 1 goes downstream 990 yards and length 2 goes upstream 2500 yards to the stream limit.

Maunby - Left Bank (YO7 4HH)

The bottom length runs from the field below the old railway bridge (130 yards) and the field above the railway bridge, which runs up and around the bend for 470 yards. The bottom part of the length enjoys quite a lot of tree cover on the far bank, but the upper part has more cover on the near side. The depth varies from a fast, shallow water below the bend to a deep steady channel under the railway bridge.

Length 1 - Left Bank (YO7 4HQ)

This length is accessed over the stile by foot, so travel light if going to the bottom pegs. It contains lots of tree cover all along the length, but especially near the bottom where trees encroach from both banks. It is generally a deeper, straighter run of steadier water and with the trees, it gives the fish plenty of cover to hide up in.

Length 2 - Left Bank (YO7 4HQ)

The upper length is quite a lot different to the bottom length by it having lots of sharp bends and shallower runs of water. There is tree cover, but most of it is on the outside of the bends. It can be accessed all the way up the flood bank by car, but be-careful as turning around can be difficult. This length is also available for night fishing, but you must apply and receive a night permit from the Licence & Ticket Secretary or Assistant Secretary before fishing - see Members Book.

The main species are chub, dace, grayling, barbel, roach, perch, gudgeon, eel and pike.
